    General Summary

    The Art Director is responsible for providing design leadership to the Design Team, taking ownership of and having basic knowledge of all on-going design projects, and also actively working on design projects, to ensure all work is completed on time, on brand/season and as requested.

     

    This individual works within and across small interdependent teams, and must develop the design skills, and creative and strategic knowledge of the Design Team. He/she will have an understanding of balance required between design, communication and partnership, and how these elements work together to further growth and sales in stores and online. The Art Director provides design expertise and best practices for the development of all design and creative assets, and must be able to inspire and develop the Design Team, and ensure goals and objectives are met on time and as requested.

     

    This is a salaried, full-time manager-level position demanding hands-on instruction and collaboration with designers, Brand Marketing Team and others, which requires a minimum of 8 hours per day, 5 days per week working in either the Cleveland or Columbus offices, to meet the needs of teams in both locations, excluding lunch and holidays. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

    • Manages a team of graphic designers in the Columbus and Cleveland offices.
      • Manages day-to-day issues that affect job and team performance
      • Provides design direction and feedback on projects
      • Assigns and reviews all design projects, and ensures each is completed on time, on brand/season and as requested
      • Approves all time sheets and expenses, as well as PTO, ensuring design needs are fully covered at all times
      • Actively works to develop the skills and knowledge of each team member, and creates goals, monitors goals, and provides guidance and feedback on performance
      • Meets regularly with team and individuals for status on projects, and to ensure they have the resources/information they need to satisfactorily complete projects
    • Manages the Photography Studio in the Cleveland office.
      • Manages day-to-day issues that affect job and team performance
      • Provides photography direction and feedback on projects
      • Approves all time sheets and expenses, as well as PTO, ensuring design needs are fully covered at all times
      • Actively works to develop the skills and knowledge of each team member, and creates goals, monitors goals, and provides guidance and feedback on performance
      • Meets regularly with team and individuals for status on projects, and to ensure they have the resources/information they need to satisfactorily complete projects
    • Manage execution, and uphold brand standards of all design assets including but not limited to: Email Marketing, Direct Mail Campaigns, In-Store Signage, Site Display, Advertising and Web Product Images as approved by the Marketing VP
    • Manage and delegate responsibilities to Design Team and Photography Team; provide direction and leadership, support/feedback, and proof all art and photos to ensure each has been executed on time, on brand/season and as requested.
    • Maintain Brand Standards and Seasonal Standards among the Photography and Design Teams, utilizing style guides approved by Marketing VP and sourced through brainstorming sessions.
    • Leads Creative Brainstorming Sessions. Collaboratively work with Design Team and Brand Marketing Team to create Seasonal styles, looks, themes and style guides.
    • Translate marketing and branding strategies into innovative and impressive campaigns that stimulate targeted audiences. The Art Director must think beyond simply completing tasks, and ensure all design and content assets work together, are at the highest standards and align with the brand/seasonal standards.

    • Present design concepts in a clear and concise manner, accept feedback openly and move concepts forward adjusting accordingly.
    • Manage multiple projects and competing work priorities, demands and changes in a very fast paced work environment.
    • Create sketches, wireframes, storyboards, roughs to visualize ideas, user flows, process flows and site maps for review with Design Team and Marketing VP.
    • Partner with the Internet Team on day-to-day design updates and site changes.
    • Partner with the Brand Marketing Team on day-to-day design updates, project updates and brand changes.
    • Attends and contributes to necessary meetings to ensure Design Team is represented, informed and up-to-date with projects, promotions, etc.
    • Basic understanding of web standards, UX best practices, and ensures that Design Team adheres to same standards.

    Education and Experience

    1. Bachelor's degree, or higher, in Fine Arts, Graphic Design or Visual Communication Design
    2. Minimum five years’ experience; agency experience preferred
    3. Fluent in Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
    4. Hands-on experience with logo design, typography, color, web layout design, email layout design
    5. Demonstrated expertise in creating design solutions, digital marketing and e-commerce solutions.

     

    Working Conditions

    Normal; no adverse or hazardous working conditions. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
